Like most others, I've been hustling all my life, busy securing a sparkling future for myself and my family. You probably went through the whole routine as well. Did you forget about your passion somewhere? Fantasized putting aside all your cares and just hitting the roads like a wanderer? But of course, your age stared at you in the face. It did for me. Perhaps it's too late?

Well it isn't. The world is a dazzling place and there's so much for you to see. Besides, isn't it irrational that you rely on your age to take decisions instead of your own capacity?

Rekindle that spark within

Topping almost everyone's bucket list is travelling. When you're young, you're of course taxed with dozens of responsibilities of all kinds. For most people, and this is perfectly understandable - they can't step out on their own will. When you want to finally retire and travel though, the question of age and related discomfort jumps in.

There are certain annoying issues too. Companies may not provide travel insurance easily. Folks are apprehensive of their physical abilities becoming a limiting factor. Some fear discrimination issues they might face from the younger lot. But if it gives you bliss, should you really let these insignificant issues stop you from wandering around?

Nearly all of my most memorable travel experiences came from the other side of age 50. I've felt all sorts of emotions - thrill, loneliness, ecstasy - perhaps everything I needed to feel, in the time I've spent outside. At the end of the day - age is irrelevant.

There is nothing that should hinder you from hitting the road. Let me take you along.

Go Cruising

Though cruising isn't exclusively meant for us aged folks alone, there are a number of cruises which will appeal to our demographic due to the comfort level offered. Take Royal Caribbean’s Alaska Adventures line of cruises. I've been lucky to be exposed to a variety of new experiences - Alaska’s beautiful landscape, the fascinatingly different way of life, and of course, the whole cruise experience I now recommend to everyone I know.

Royal Caribbean also has a cruise for Norway. I plan to get myself on one of those very soon!

Culinary Trips

A passion for cooking and a thirst for new taste drove me and my wife to two blissful culinary trips. Italy was the first on our list. Wine and cooking tours are all over the place. Sagres - which are local food festivals with a major focus on local ingredients are the best time to be in Italy.

Spain has dedicated food markets that packed us with sophisticated Mediterranean flavors and wine. When in Spain, do get yourself some tapas - which is what Spanish bars serve as snack sized portions of their food. It isn't just sights and music that can induce exotic feelings - it's food too. After all, taste too is a sensory input like any other.

Volunteer Tourism

Sure, it's been comfortable working in a capitalist economy where you're rewarded for your merit and can achieve your dreams as you go along. But plenty of us, me included, would love to give back.

Volunteer trips are about just that. You can choose from a diverse range of areas you could provide assistance with and contribute. At 56, I headed to Cape Town in South Africa to spend a few weeks educating children in English. Whilst there, I headed to the Castle of Good Hope (the oldest colonial building in the country) and Table Mountain (at an attitude of 3500+ feet!). Truly amongst the best use of my time in the recent past.

Mountain Retreats

I'd wanted to ace mountain hikes for a large part of my life. Wanted to relax at higher altitudes while I enjoy dewy mountain retreats. I did pull off an overwhelming trip to Ladakh a couple of years ago, and it's been life changing. You're likely to be told that altitude sickness could be a potential issue.

Trust me, it's not.

You are Never Too Old. Be B(old)

Don't sit back and curse your age. It's been a boon for me. Analyse your time and health, plan it and head out. Fulfill the dreams the 'younger you' had and satiate your bucket list in these golden years.

Having come on this journey, I've realised this is the ideal time. Be B(old).
